Photographer / mixed media artist / owner
Art has always played an important role in my life and I have been
fortunate enough to find my voice as a painter and musician as
well as photographer. However, it is through the lens that I have
found my calling.
I began learning the fundamentals of photographing artwork in
the mid 90’s by shooting my own work in order to exhibit my
paintings. I studied photography, printmaking and painting at The
Evergreen State College. When the word got out that a fellow
painter had the equipment and skills to photograph artwork, I
started shooting slides for friends who were applying to graduate
school, and soon for friends of friends and so on. What began as a
means to an end had blossomed into a career. I opened the doors
to Artist Eye Portfolio Studio in 2004. Soon after starting my
business, I was approached by art photographer, Ken Wagner,
who became my mentor. Ken shared with me his approach to
photographing art and helped to make me the photographer I am
today. Ken would say, “When when you get behind the camera,
your goal is not to take a copy of the art, it is to capture a portrait
of the work”.
I use light and shadow as a tool, helping draw the eye to the work
being photographed. Once there, the subject is presented with an
acute attention to detail, color accuracy, texture and brushwork.
As a painter myself, I understand the importance of these details.
My clients are creative and I enjoy the collaboration that occurs in
order to create the perfect photographs for their portfolios or
presenting their products in the best light.
Most importantly, I love what I do. I love coming to the studio,
turning on my lights and starting each day. I am originally from
the beautiful state of Alaska and now reside in the beautiful state
of Washington with my wife Tam, our son Ever, and Boston Terrier
Moxie.
